Agri-Tourism Learning Experience in Tanzania

On Friday, 11 September 2026, I had the opportunity to participate in an inspiring agricultural learning and farm-visiting experience in Morogoro, Tanzania, organized by AgriScape Innovations Company Limited (ASI Co. Ltd.) in collaboration with the East Africa Youth Agro-Innovation Nexus (EAYAIN). The experience gave me an opportunity to explore Tanzania’s agricultural practices, innovations, farming systems, and agribusiness opportunities first-hand. The visit was a valuable combination of practical agricultural learning, cultural exchange, and exploration of Tanzania’s rich agricultural heritage. I interacted with farmers, agricultural practitioners, and technical experts and gained a deeper understanding of how agriculture practiced and developed under local conditions.

Exploring Farming Practices at SUGECO

My first major field experience was at SUGECO, where I was introduced to different farming activities and crop-production systems. I had the opportunity to observe chili production and interact with farmers about their farming practices. This experience helped me understand how farmers manage crop production under Tanzanian conditions and how local knowledge, farm management, and modern agricultural practices combined to improve productivity.

Training on Drip Irrigation and Water Management

The visit continued at another farm where drip irrigation was being used for the production of maize, vegetables, and watermelon. I was particularly interested in seeing how irrigation technology applied directly on the farm. I learned how drip irrigation could support efficient water use while maintaining crop productivity. Seeing the system operating under real farm conditions made the concept of sustainable irrigation much clearer to me than simply learning about it theoretically

Hands-on Agricultural Training

During the program, I visited several agricultural sites and participated in short practical training sessions and field activities. Working with the technical teams from AgriScape Innovations and EAYAIN, I gained practical experience in several areas of agriculture. I was introduced to nursery management, plant propagation, budding and grafting, greenhouse technologies, irrigation systems, environmental conservation, and farm management practices. The practical nature of the activities was one of the most valuable aspects of my experience. I was able to learn by observing, asking questions, and participating directly in different agricultural activities.

Visiting the Dragon Fruit Farm

The experience concluded with a visit to AgriScape’s dragon fruit farm in Sangasanga. There, I learned more about dragon fruit production and observed how an innovative crop enterprise was being developed as part of a diversified agricultural system. I also participated in a farm-based competition, which added an enjoyable and interactive element to the visit. Beyond the competition itself, the activity allowed me to experience agriculture in a more engaging way and demonstrated how farms can also serve as places for learning, innovation, recreation, and knowledge exchange.

What I Took Away From the Experience

My visit to AgriScape and the different farms in Morogoro gave me a much deeper appreciation of agriculture in Tanzania. I learned that agriculture was not only about crop production, but also about innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, knowledge exchange, and community development. The practical experience strengthened my understanding of sustainable agriculture and allowed me to connect theoretical knowledge with real farming situations. I also appreciated the opportunity to interact with local farmers and agricultural professionals and to learn from their experiences. Most importantly, the visit gave me a memorable opportunity to experience Tanzanian agriculture from the field level. I returned from the program with new practical knowledge, valuable cultural experiences, and a greater appreciation of the opportunities that exist within Tanzania’s agricultural sector. I was grateful to AgriScape Innovations Company Limited and EAYAIN for organizing the experience and for providing such an engaging platform for agricultural learning, cultural exchange, and international collaboration.
